Dancing with the 'Star Breather'

Kathleen, a dear and wise friend of mine, calls God the 'Star Breather'. I love her name for Him. He breathes stars into the sky.

Maybe because I love to ballroom dance, this name makes me think of the show 'Dancing with the Stars'. Why do so many people watch the program week after week? The costumes are sexy and the celebrity drama spices things up. But, most people tune in to see the dancers. Even if you can't dance, it's exciting to watch amateurs and their dance coaches glide or rocket across the dance floor.

Funny thing about dancing: God loved King David when he danced in praise to Him. David did it unselfconsciously, before his subjects. David's wife didn't like it since he was the King and she thought him undignified. Wow, what was she thinking? Most women love a guy who can dance!

You've seen young children wiggle and sway to music, happily unaware. Their natural freedom is so dear. We're designed to move to music, maybe until those lousy experiences at junior high dances.

Have you heard a song that makes you want to dance? Not just want to dance, but have to dance? Like magic: your body moves and you feel alive. You smile and life feels brighter.

Music turns a switch on for many of us. Our feet and hands tap out the rhythm. Why are we made like this? I believe because God loves us and wants us to experience simple pleasure. I imagine our dancing makes Him smile, like little children swaying to a song make their parents smile.

I love waltzing around a huge ballroom floor. My Father's gift of movement thrills me. It's great aerobic exercise, minus the boring gym routine!

I hope you enjoy the gift of dance. However, if dance doesn't touch your heart, find what does. A hike in the hills, surfing the waves, climbing a mountain, snow boarding in powder, or hang gliding with birds - Our Father God created each of us with a unique capacity to appreciate life. Find yours.

Maybe you sing in a choir, play in a band, bicycle on trails or twirl around a kitchen making your favorite food. It's certain God put something in your heart to love doing. He is a generous God.

The One who breathed the stars into the night sky, and loved King David's dancing, also breathed the breath of life into us. Enjoy yourself!

Sincerely,
